Starlings Taking a Bath

I took this picture from my office using a 70-300 mm zoom lens. The birds love to use this bowl for a bird bath and up to five starlings will get in the bowl and splash around until they are finished. Then they stand around looking soaked like these do. The water will be filled with oil from their feathers and with dust, mites and lice. So it needs to be changed and for this reason, I change the water in these bowls several times each day. There are 8 bowls and I made them using a sand/cement mixture.

Watching the birds' drink and bathe technique is interesting.

You see the checking around for predators before moving in, the enjoyment, the selfishness, the strong v the weak, the comedy ets ets great fun for humans and nice for the birds.

How cool that you've made the birdbath bowls (and are willing to keep them so bird-friendly!)

They are lucky to have your yard. :-)
